West Michigan Heart patients currently taking Coumadin are encouraged to participate in our Coumadin Clinics. Warfarin (also known as Coumadin) is an anticoagulant prescribed to reduce the ability of the blood to clot, thereby reducing the risk of certain conditions such as heart attacks, leg clots (deep venous thrombosis), lung clots (pulmonary emboli), and other disorders. However, high levels of warfarin in the blood can increase the risk of bleeding. It is very important to monitor and manage the levels of warfarin in your blood. Our Coumadin clinics utilize the latest technology to deliver Protime results immediately and offer patient education opportunities that can make Coumadin therapy both safer and more effective.
Most patients on Coumadin will visit various medical laboratories to have their blood drawn via venipuncture. The lab processes the test and reports the results to the physicians' offices by written report. The results are then interpreted by either the physician or his/her staff, and the patient's dosage may be adjusted accordingly. Finally, the staff contacts the patient by phone to communicate the results and any dosage changes. It is very important for the staff to have an accurate phone number for the patient so that the patient can receive instructions immediately.
West Michigan Heart Coumadin Clinics manage this tracking process for Coumadin therapy patients. Our Coumadin Clinics are staffed by Registered Nurses specially trained in oral anticoagulation. Patients receive education tailored to their needs, preferences, and lifestyle.
